Blue Storm (also called Secret Crush/Blue Storm, Japanese name Shinoburedo) is this amazing repeat-blooming shrub rose that was bred by Kyoei Roses in Japan back in 2006. It's pretty much a star in the rose world and everyone agrees it's a fantastic variety.
Core Features
1. Flower Color & Form: The blooms are cup-shaped to rosette, about 8-9cm across with 25-30 petals. When it's cool out, they show off this gorgeous lavender-blue-purple color, but get a bit pinkish when it's hot. They have this lovely mixed fruity scent, each flower lasts around 8-10 days, and they bloom in clusters that come back pretty quickly.
2. Plant: It grows to about 120cm tall, stays upright and compact with good branching and not too many thorns. You can grow it in the ground or in pots, and if you're growing it on a balcony, you can easily keep it shorter with some pruning.
3. Resistance & Light: It's pretty good at fighting off powdery mildew and black spot. It's also great with shade - it'll bloom with just 2 hours of direct sun a day, though 4+ hours is even better. In summer, it doesn't like too much direct sun, so give it some shade and good airflow to keep the petals from getting crispy. It can handle cold down to about -10°C.
Care Tips
- Soil: Go for something loose, slightly acidic, and well-draining (try a mix of leaf mold, peat, and perlite in a 4:3:3 ratio).
- Watering: Only water when the soil feels dry, and when you do, give it a good soak. Just make sure it doesn't sit in water.
- Fertilizing: Feed it with a light fertilizer regularly in spring and fall. Before it blooms, add some extra phosphorus and potassium.
- Pruning: After it flowers, cut off the spent blooms (leaving 2-3 pairs of leaves). In winter, give it a good hard prune and remove any weak branches.
- Pests & Diseases: Good airflow is key. Keep an eye out for red spider mites and aphids and treat them early.
Pros & Cons
- Pros: It blooms like crazy, has this unique color, is pretty tough, and does well in shade - perfect for beginners!
- Cons: The flowers can turn pink in hot weather, and they don't like too much sun or they'll get crispy edges.
